How To: Quick, Simple Sequin Jacket

Yeah I'm on a bit of a sequin high here. If you ask me, the fact that our New Year's tradition is desert camping definitely does not mean I'm going to spend my NYE in Patagonia. At least not fully. This is a super quick story about the sequin jacket I sewed the morning of Dec 31st, before we headed out on the dunes.

I forgot to photograph my materials, but I used a 1.5 m piece of sequin fabric (with light one-way stretch), scissors, vacuum cleaner (!), matching thread, sewing machine. For more tips on sewing sequins see my previous post.

I. Here are the measurements of my cut pieces. The other front piece looks crooked in the photo but they were identical..

II. To construct, I started by sewing the shoulders..

III. Then the sleeves..

.. And the sleeve underarms and sides.

IV. To finish the front, I cut two panels, 9-10 cm wide, to match the shape of the front pieces, and pinned and sewed them right sides facing. I stopped my stitch a couple cm from the shoulder line..

.. Then turned them onto the reverse.

V. For the back piece, I used some of the mesh at the edges of my sequin fabric to make a small lining piece, which I attached to the front panels at the shoulder line. 

VI. Last, I used some fabric to press the front panel fold through, and hand-sewed the free edge of the panel onto the reverse. I also did a hand-sewn finish on the hem and the sleeves.

I'm also quite into wearing it tied up in front!
